West Martello Tower: Key West

West Martello Tower, Key West

The second redeeming feature of Key West was the West Martello Tower. We came upon it completely by accident while checking out the beaches of Key West. Located on Higgs Beach, walking distance from our hotel, stands the West Martello Tower, or rather what’s left of it. Martello towers are small defensive forts mostly built on coasts. Work on this one in Key West began in 1863 and though never fully finished nor armed, in 1976 it was added to the US National Register of Historic Places.

Apparently in 1949 many claimed that it was an eyesore on the shoreline and wanted it levelled and a new beach area put in. But the Key West Garden Club took interest in the old fort and turned it into a tropical garden. Now it is a unique attraction where you can see plants that only grow in this region.

The Tower and Garden Club is free to enter with an option to donate, making it great for budget travellers like myself. It’s self guided meaning you can wander around as long as you'd like and take your time enjoying the spectacular ocean views, beautiful gardens and what’s left of the tower. Also, with many areas to sit and relax it’s a great place to bring a book and a coffee and escape the sun and heat.

If you are looking for an escape from the crowds of Duval Street and the commercialized Mallory Square, I highly recommend a leisurely stroll to the West Martello Tower. A bit off the beaten path of Key West, but right on the best (in my opinion) beach on the island, plus surrounded by a few other attractions that you might be interested in checking out. For example, right across the street you will find the African Cemetery at Higgs Beach. And a little further down the beach is the Aids Memorial and White Street Fishing Pier. For the true nature lover there is also the Indigenous Park around the corner.

Safe Travels!
