When I went to Rodanthe it was my first stop on a two week, five city road trip. Therefore I didn’t have the time to see everything there is to see on this long peaceful island. My goal for Rodanthe was to see Serendipity and to take in the serenity of the Outer Banks as I relaxed on the beach listening to the Atlantic waves. However, this island, dotted with seaside villages has a lot more to offer. Here is my guide to help you plan your seaside getaway…
First stop Cape Hatters Lighthouse
This lighthouse protects one of the most treacherous parts of the Outer Banks. It’s recognizable worldwide with its black and white candy-cane stripes. At 208 feet tall, the worlds’ tallest brick lighthouse, with a beam of light that reaches 20 miles into the ocean, it’s worth the drive… and the climb to the top. Check out the Cape Hatters Lighthouse website more information about this beauty and how to visit.
Next up Jockey’s Ridge State Park
Though you can see the giant dunes all along the islands beaches, the ones in the park are the tallest on the Atlantic coast. In the “park”, more like a dessert, you will find a visitor centre with a museum where you can learn all about the ecology of these sand hills. For hours and directions to the state park visit their website.
Take flight at Wright Brothers National Memorial
If you love to fly, as a traveler I know I sure do, visit the place where that was all made possible. This is the place where the Wright Brothers took their first successful flight and changed the world, and travel, forever. Learn more on the memorial website.
For some history on local heroes visit Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station
Beautifully renovated and restored, it is a great example of Carpenter Gothic style architecture, reminiscent of Scandinavian ski lodges. But more impressive is the history of this site, known as the birth place of the US Coast Guard, and the 177,286 lives the station’s crew saved during 44 years of service. Visit to hear all the stories of bravery and heroism.
Last but not least, Serendipity House
It comes with a hefty price tag but you can rent the house (yes the whole house!) for your beachfront vacation. Can’t afford to stay in it? Well you can still take a peak around the house. Who knows, you might get lucky like I did and some nice occupants will let you up on the decks for a closer look. But if that doesn’t happen, remember no trespassing, see some photos of the interior on the website instead.
It’s a very long island with many more gems to discover and lots of activities to enjoy. Hope this gives you enough of a glimpse to make you want to visit and find out for yourself.
Safe Travels!
